Gareth left me alone after the truth was out. He wasn’t happy about the fact that I was now the one person on the planet who knew the secret he was trying so hard to keep. I knew he didn’t trust me, but now he had no choice.

There was a knock at my door just as I was about to head for the shower. I groaned. What now? Didn’t anyone in this place get any sleep?

War stood at the threshold when I opened the door. He wore a white T-shirt and a pair of dark gray sweatpants. I stood there like an idiot, blinking at the commander. I did not prepare for this. I needed time to train my eyes not to dip down and… No, Beatrix. Stop it right now. He’s a professional, so you need to keep your vagina in your pants.

I pasted a smile on my lips, tilting my head. “Did you get all dolled up just to visit little ole me?” Wow, way to be subtle.

He looked down at himself, confused, as if he legitimately had no idea what kind of power a pair of sweatpants like that could have over anyone who was partial to the male species. “I was going for a run and I thought you might feel like joining me.”

My brows rose in pleasant surprise. “You mean I’m allowed to leave my cage?”

He gave me a deadpan look. “I’ll take that as a ‘thank you, War, for thinking of me.’ Get dressed and meet me out in the hall when you’re ready. Wear something you can take off easily.”

“Wow, aren’t we a bit presumptuous tonight?” I smiled cheekily.

It took a moment for his own words to dawn on him, and I watched as the little lightbulb seemed to flare on above his head. “What I meant to say was, wear something that you can easily shift in.”

My smile grew, and excitement started to build in earnest. “I’m exhausted, but you’re lucky I’ll never say no to the chance to run as a wolf. Hold on, I’ll be right back.” He opened his mouth to say something, but I shut the door in his face.

I changed in record time, throwing on a ratty, oversized shirt and a pair of old gym shorts, not even bothering with shoes. I was excited to shift, and so was the wolf under my skin. It’d been a couple of days since my run through the woods back at home, and I was itching for it.

I got a few odd looks as War led me through the consulate lobby—mostly from humans who eyed my homeless chic attire with disdain. I just smiled and waved, too elated about finally getting some fresh air. War shook his head, rolling his eyes at my big, cheesy smile, but he couldn’t hide the light in his eyes either. It made me wonder if this was a normal thing he liked to do at the end of a long night, or if the only reason he decided on this impromptu run was for my sake.
